چکیده

Introduction Massively Multiplayer Online Games (MMOGs) have emerged in recent years as an increasingly popular form of entertainment. They offer persistent, richly detailed 3D universes in which players cooperate or compete with each other, trade, and socialize. In this, they share characteristics with the more broadly-defined virtual worlds (VWs), their distinguishing feature being a more objective-driven environment than VWs (in the “sandbox” environment of the virtual world Second Life, for instance, residents are free to engage in any activity they can imagine, unlike online games where players tend to focus on well-defined activities such as combat, exploration, etc.). The most successful MMOG to date, World of Warcraft (WoW), is home to 11 million subscribers worldwide, and several competitors host at least 1 million players or more [20].

Collaborative games: Lessons learned from board games

Collaborative mechanisms are starting to become prominent in computer games, like massively multiplayer online games (MMOGs); however, by their nature, these games are difficult to investigate. Game play is often complex and the underlying mechanisms are frequently opaque. In contrast, board games are simple. Their game play is fairly constrained and their core mechanisms are transparent enough...

More than just 'XP': learning social skills in massively multiplayer online games

Playing computer games is becoming more and more a social experience. Players often sit together in front of a single machine, sharing skills and expertise to accomplish a game’s objectives (King & Borland, 2003); and as soon as machines could be connected to one another, gamers were quick to exploit the possibility to live and play in shared virtual worlds (Cherny, 1999; Cuciz, 2001). It took ...

Trainee Teachers' e-Learning Experiences of Computer Play

Commercial computer games have great potential as learning tools as many require complex problem solving, theory testing, collaboration, and evaluation, all components of experiential learning (Gee 2003). Indeed, Schrader, Zheng, and Young (2006) argue that there are many benefits to be derived from the pedagogical use of commercial computer games, particularly massively multiplayer online game...

Towards a Framework for Designing Speech-Based Player Interaction in Multiplayer Online Games

In this paper we consider the question of how best to design voice communication for use in online multiplayer games. We propose a framework to helps shape both our understanding of games and how we approach games as objects of study and as artifacts to be designed. The framework suggests a focus on designing player-to-player interaction within games. We discuss existing implementations of voic...
